No two days are the same as a hose inspector at Integron

Anyone who thinks that working as a hose inspector is mainly routine work is mistaken. At Integron Aandrijftechniek no two days are the same. From inspecting hydraulic hoses to offshore operations and pressure testing with oil, water, or nitrogen: the job requires technical insight, precision, and responsibility.

To provide a better insight into the work and the atmosphere at Integron, we spoke with Stian. The 57-year-old hose inspector from Zuidlaren has been with the company for years and knows better than anyone what the profession entails. Outside of work, he enjoys riding his motorcycle, fishing, or providing first aid at events. His motto? “Seize the day, enjoy your life.”

“What I like most? The variety,” he says. “I’ve always done several things here. Turning, milling, welding, flame spraying…and of course, hose inspection. That’s what makes the work so enjoyable.”

The atmosphere at Integron also plays a big role in this. According to Stian, the company is informal, collegial, and young at heart. “You get the space to be yourself here. Everyone helps each other.”

Working as a hose inspector: precise technical work with a lot of freedom

As a hose inspector, you check hoses for safety and quality. This is done, among other things, for applications in the gas, oil, and offshore industries. Safety is always paramount.

“You can’t cut corners,” Stian explains. “We work at gas-carrying locations and with ATEX-certified material. Everything just has to be right.”

Stian begins his inspection with a visual check, where he checks for, among other things:

  • Corrosion
  • Stiffness
  • Damage to the outer jacket
  • Drying cracks and hairline cracks
  • Wear around couplings
  • Play behind the coupling
  • The condition of connections and threads
  • How the jacket is seated, to prevent steel wire from becoming exposed

After the visual inspection, hoses are pressure tested with water, oil, or nitrogen. When everything is in order, the hoses are certified, and the hose certificates are stored in a database. Customer-specific registrations are also possible.

What makes the work particularly interesting is the variety. "Things often change midway through, or additional tasks come up. No two weeks are the same."

New colleagues can expect good guidance, but also quickly gain a lot of independence. "You'll join a great team. You'll receive guidance when needed, but then also the freedom to organize your own work."

For those who enjoy technical work, dare to take responsibility, and love variety, the job as a hose inspector is a great challenge!
